The Skymap

The Skymap is a new application from Mediated Spaces, Inc. that uses GPS-enabled mobile devices to display the current sky, planets, moon, constellations all at a user’s current location. The application helps amateur astronomers conveniently explore the current sky whenever and wherever they are, on their mobile device. Mediated Spaces, Inc., the pioneering mobile software development company focusing on citizen science, announced that its award-winning Skymap application is now available on iPhone through uLocate’s WHERE™ application on top of the eighty other supported devices.
The Skymap uses the uLocate’s WHERE™ platform for access to GPS functionality, and an interactive Skymap program to produce the current sky. On the main page, users select a direction (”azimuth”), and a horizon view of the sky appears on the phone’s screen. The celestial map can be rotated in 45-degree increments; the field of view itself is what an observer typically sees, about 45 degrees. A night vision option preserves the night-adjustment of the users’ eyes.
